I used to love films, film making, writing, editing, camera, lighting (everything but directing). Then I went to LA to become a screenwriter. I discovered that at 34 I was too old, too female, and too interested in movies like The Piano instead of what Shane Black and Tarantino were delivering.
So I came back home to San Francisco where I belong. And put my film making dreams on the shelf.
Recently, a dear friend reminded me of my former love–and I started studying again. Finally, I dug out scraps of video footage I shot at the 2025 New Orleans Bouchercon. It’s not exactly narrative, but it was great fun to figure out how iMovie works. Plus, I gave myself hands-on practice making compromise decisions to get the thing done.
I hope to have a better shot list for Calgary Bouchercon in a few weeks. Don’t be surprised if I ask you for a quick on-camera chat!
Meanwhile, here’s the “movie” I made–my first: https://youtu.be/OYaMhL9Cl4E?si=_SKgrJ5i-evuXhTZ
(it’s not embedded because I couldn’t make it work)
Keep doing what you love, even if it isn’t exactly the way you imagined it.
